Nigeria requires $7.5bn to expand electricity transmission by 2019 – TCN

*Mambilla power station can provide 3,000MW – Fashola

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said on Monday that its on-going five year expansion programme, designed at expanding electricity transmission capacity to 11,500 Mega Watts(MW) by 2019 will require 7.5 billion dollars.

The Managing Director of TCN, Abubakar stated that there was no going back on the project if the country must actualize its dream of shoring up its power generating projection

Meanwhile, Minister of Power, Works and Housing Babatunde Raji Fashola has said that the Mambilla power station in Taraba State when completed could add about 3,000 megawatts of electricity to the national grid

Fashola who stated this during a conference of the National Association of Energy Correspondents, while speaking on the topic: ‘Gas To Power: Challenges and Opportunities’, said that though gas is a main source of energy, not just gas will be enough for the target of “Incremental Power” under the Roadmap for Change strategy of the power ministry.

He said: “Mambila Power Station, for example, is likely to be our most defining in the road to incremental power. Situated in Taraba state, it will potentially add 3000MW to the grid.
