Afcon qualifier: Namibia’s Brave Warriors shock hosts Mozambique

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday defeated the National team of Libya 4-0 in the first leg of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between the two teams.The match, played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State in south-eastern Nigeria, saw the Nigerian team take the lead in the 4th minute of the first half when Odion Ighali, who was brought down by the goalkeeper inside the 18-yard box, converted the resulting penalty kick.

The Super Eagles, who dominated the game in the first half was denied the second goal when Alex Iwobi’s goal-bound ball hit the crossbar.

The first half ended 1-0 in favour of the Super Eagles.

The Super Eagles continued their attack in the second half, but the Libyans lifted their game and was able to absorb the attacks and at times mounted pressure on the Super Eagles.

Odion Ighali got his brace for the Super Eagles in the 58th minute, when he connected a through pass from Alex Iwobi and beat the oncoming Libyan goalkeeper for Nigeria’s second goal.

The third goal for Nigeria came in the 69th minute when Ighali latched onto a good pass from Ahmed Musa to get his hattrick for the Super Eagles.

The continued attack of the Super Eagles paid off for the team when Samuel Kalu, who connected a pass from Henry Onyekuru and powered a shot from outside the 18-yard area that beat the Libyan keeper for the fourth goal.

With the 4-0 score line, the Super Eagles are now 2nd in Group E with 6 points from 3 matches.

South Africa lead the group with 7 points from 3 matches while Libya is 3rd with 4 points and Seychelles are fourth with no points yet from 3 matches.
