Steve Torrence leads NHRA Top Fuel qualifying

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Steve Torrence led Top Fuel qualifying Friday in the NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway as he tries to extend his playoff-opening winning streak to four events.

Torrence had a 3.704-second run at 331.53 mph during the last qualifying pass of the session.

“It was really smooth early, all the way down there,” Torrence said. “I enjoy coming here, racing and I enjoyed coming back. We have done really well in the four-wide format. We are going to try to carry the momentum we have right now into race day.”

Ron Capps led in Funny Car, Erica Enders in Pro Stock, and Eddie Krawiec in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the fourth of six playoff events in the during the 2018 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship.

Capps had a 3.726 at 328.54 in a Dodge Charger, Enders ran a 6.518 at 211.69 in a Chevrolet Camaro, and Krawiec had a 6.806 at 197.83 on a Harley-Davidson.
