Lagos-Ibadan Expressway reconstructed to 40%

The Federal Ministry of Works says the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has reached 40 per cent completion.

The ministry had in November said that the work had progressed up to 32 per cent completion.

The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mr. Godwin Eke, during a tour of the road by engineers supervising the project, also cautioned motorists to avoid excessive speed on the road to avert accidents.

He said, “This action to monitor the flow of traffic was necessitated by the insistence of the Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, that since we have some improvements on the road, we should go to the highway and get the feeling of the motoring public so that we can know the area we have to improve upon.

“My advice to motorists is that they should drive with caution, carefully and slowly, because we noticed that they are speeding excessively. There is usually the temptation to speed more than necessary when driving on a smooth road like this.”

The Federal Controller of Works, Ogun State, Mr. Olukayode Popoola, who was also present, said the traffic situation had improved on the road.

“There is a lot of improvement because a lot of money has been spent on this road to alleviate the sufferings of road users,” he said.

Popoola also appealed to motorists to continue to cooperate with the contractors handling the project when they returned to site on January 3, 2017 to speed up the remaining part of the work, and also called for increased funding of the project for its speedy completion.

The Unit Commander, Ogun, Federal Roads Safety Corps, Mr. David Ogunjana, said he was worried about the way motorists were driving on the highway.

He added, “We appreciate the Federal Government because this road is free of obstruction now and we have not recorded crashes compared to last year. This time, I want to advise road users to apply caution in the way they drive on this road, because it is smooth and free.

“No obstruction, no gridlock, the only thing we are afraid of is excessive speeding; motorists should use speed limiting devices to monitor their speed.”
