‘No Lagos street barricades lock before 12am’
The Lagos State Government on Wednesday insisted that it would deal with residents’ associations, which failed to comply with the directive of keeping their streets’ gate open except between 12am and 5am.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami, said this at a meeting with community development associations and other stakeholders in the state, a statement said on Wednesday.
The meeting, which held in Alausa, Ikeja, had the Special Adviser on Communities and Communications, Kehinde Bamigbetan, and the Senior Special Assistant on Community Affairs, Alhaji Tajudeen Quadri, among others, in attendance.
Folami said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had directed that all gates and barricades on streets should operate on regulated time for closure, which was between 12 midnight and 5.30 am.
The commissioner said any street which failed to comply would face the wrath of the government, as the barricades usually constituted obstruction of traffic, especially in areas where such barricades were on roads serving as alternative link routes.
He said, “The Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, will not leave any stone unturned by providing adequate security across the state to have a safe and secured environment. The neighbourhood watchers in the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs will also partake in providing security.”
Bamigbetan implored the CDAs in the state to ensure strict compliance, urging the Executive Secretaries in the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas to organise town hall meetings where residents would be sensitised on the directive.
The Chairman of the Executive Secretaries, aka Conference 57, Kolade Alabi, said the LG bosses would work with the CDAs and other stakeholders in their various communities on compliance.
