LASG Approve Hostels For LASU, 70-Years Retirement Age
The Lagos State Government has approved hostels for the Lagos State University, Ojo.
The government also okayed 70 years as retirement age for professors of the institution.
The state Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, signed a bill, the Lagos State University (Amendment) Bill, into law to make these possible on Tuesday at the Lagos House, Ikeja, describing it as very significant.
The law also approved a five-year single term for the Vice-Chancellor of the school.
It will be recalled that the LASU Academic Staff Union of Universities, had engaged the immediate past VC of the institution, Prof. John Obafunwa, in a running battle.
The union had said it wanted the government to approve 70 years as the retirement age for professors, and a single term of five years for the VC, among others.
Ambode said the law was aimed at raising the standard of the school to an enviable position and making LASU a school to be proud of.
He said, “It is the desire of the state government to build a LASU that will produce better students. In the next few days, changes will begin to happen in the school.”
He added that the law was a demonstration of his commitment to actualise the dream of the founding fathers of the institution.
He said he remained committed to raising the standard of academic excellence to a level comparable to other citadels of learning in the world.
While appreciating members of the Lagos State House of Assembly for the speedy passage of the bill, Ambode said the desire of his administration was to see LASU develop and churn out young professionals, who would lead Nigeria to greater heights in the future.
The Deputy Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni, said the law was amended to address the issues that arose during the tenure of Prof. Obafunwa as the VC of the school.
He said building hostels in LASU would help in mitigating incessant clashes between students of the school and Iba community residents.
