World Bank Reviewing Activities In Nigeria
The World Bank has commenced the review of its activities in Nigeria, ThePunchNg report.
The leader of the team undertaking the review, Guillemette Jaffrin, said this when his team visited the Bureau of Public Enterprises in Abuja on Wednesday, according to a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by the Head of Public Communications, BPE, Mr. Alex Okoh.
Although Jaffrin did not disclose the purpose of the review, he said the bank was concluding the review of its activities in Nigeria and, therefore, needed to visit the BPE for its inputs into the exercise.
Also speaking, the Director-General, BPE, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, said the privatisation agency and the Ministry of Health had commenced a joint preliminary review of the health sector legislation in order to reform the sector.
He informed the World Bank team that the reform of the health sector in the country would check quackery and high medical pilgrimage abroad by Nigerians, and also called for urgent reform of education in the country to ensure the enforcement of standards at the primary and secondary school levels.
Dikki noted that though there were regulatory institutions for tertiary education like the Nigerian Universities Commission and the National Board for Technical Education, among others, to ensure the enforcement of standards, this was lacking at the primary and secondary levels.
He attributed the high incidence of crime and other anti-social behaviours plaguing the country to the falling standards of education at the primary and secondary school levels.
According to him, the BPE is hamstrung to undertake reform initiatives at the primary and secondary school levels because of constitutional provisions.
