Power: NERC Gets Panel On Local Content
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Thursday inaugurated an 11-man Nigerian Content Consultative Forum for the electricity supply industry.
According to NERC, the initiative is in line with its regulation on National Content Development for the Power Sector 2014.
It stated that the regulation envisaged that Nigerian companies should be given first consideration for the supply of goods, works and services in the power sector.
The Chairman, NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi, who inaugurated the forum at the headquarters of the commission in Abuja, stated that the regulation flowed from the Federal Government’s policy on local content, which was first enunciated in the National Electric Power Policy of 2001, mandating the regulator to ensure local content in the electricity market.
“The regulation should not be misconstrued as nationalisation but an attempt at deepening Nigerians’ participation in the emerging electricity industry as well as stem capacity flight in the economy,” Amadi explained.
He noted that the forum would operate in advisory capacity and its membership was drawn from industry operators and other stakeholders with background in fabrication, engineering, finance services, legal, insurance, Information and Communication Technology, education and training, and any other professional services as might be considered by the commission.
According to the NERC boss, the national content regulation mandates the forum to establish a national data bank for skills development pool and ranking of service companies on capabilities and Nigerian content.
Amadi noted that Part 6(b) of the regulation stipulated that the consultative forum shall carry out a survey periodically to determine the local content participation in the power sector.
